Southern Kilimanjaro
Fit trekkers with previous altitude experience
Umbwe is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct approaches. The trail rises rapidly through the southern forest before reaching Barranco Valley and joining the southern circuit.
Because the early stages gain elevation quickly, the route provides fewer natural acclimatisation opportunities. This seven-day version adds time around Barranco before continuing towards Karanga and Barafu.

Begin through dense forest on a steep trail following the Umbwe ridge.
Continue climbing as the forest gives way to moorland and the landscape opens beneath Kibo.
Complete a controlled acclimatisation walk before returning to camp for a second night.
Climb Barranco Wall and continue across the southern circuit towards Karanga Valley.
Cross the alpine desert and prepare for the summit attempt.
Climb through the night to Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend towards Mweka Camp.
Complete the final descent through the rainforest.
Umbwe’s rapid altitude gain makes it more demanding than the other main routes. It should be selected carefully after discussing your fitness and previous altitude experience.
