Southern Kilimanjaro
Fit trekkers with previous altitude experience
Umbwe is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct approaches. The trail rises rapidly through the southern forest before reaching Barranco Valley and joining the southern circuit.
Because the early stages gain elevation quickly, the route provides fewer natural acclimatisation opportunities. This seven-day version adds time around Barranco before continuing towards Karanga and Barafu.

Walk through humid rainforest towards Mandara Hut.
Leave the forest and climb through heath and moorland with views towards Mawenzi and Kibo.
Complete an acclimatisation walk before returning to Horombo Hut for another night.
Cross the alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo before reaching the base of the summit trail.
Begin climbing at night towards Gilman’s Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak before descending to Horombo Hut.
Descend through moorland and rainforest to complete the climb.
Umbwe’s rapid altitude gain makes it more demanding than the other main routes. It should be selected carefully after discussing your fitness and previous altitude experience.
